About Us
On March 8th, 2003 - the International Women's Day - the Foundation Archive of the German Women's Movement was brought into being in Kassel with a seed capital of 57.500 €. The basic capital consisted of the prize money for the Elisabeth Selbert Prize which the Ariadne 2001 editorial team had won as well as the initial investments of 20 founding women.
Since 2005 the foundation has taken over the exclusive sponsorship and administers the collected holdings of the archive and the library which are worth nearly 2 million Euros.
The Archive of the German Women's Movement will continue the successful work which has been achieved since 1984 and will particularly secure the valuable holdings of the archive and the library. In the long term the foundation will take the opportunity to initiate new projects.
Thanks to further female benefactors the liquid assets of the foundation have already increased threefold.
The work of the Foundation Archive of the German Women's Movement is institutionally supported by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art as well as by the city of Kassel. Furthermore, the sponsoring society - the Girl-friends of the Archive of the German Women's Movement - which was founded in 1992 contributes an important share to secure the foundation's work. External funds as well as the foundation's own resources complement the budget.
