Educational and Cultural Work
With its manifold educational and cultural work the foundation aims to increase public interest in women's history and to uncover the complex roots of contemporary women's life.
The spectrum of subjects is as wide as that of women's movements: political participation and equality before the law, girl's and woman's education, labor conditions and working experiences are of interest as well as women's everyday experiences in the 19th and 20th century. Moreover, biographies of campaigner for women’s rights, life and work of female authors, musicians and other interesting personalities are presented.
The various forms of presentation reach from lectures, seminars, conventions and archive tours to readings, concerts, exhibitions and guided city tours. The foundation's sponsoring society - the Girl-friends of the Archive of the German Women's Movement - organizes an annual series of readings by female authors from the German-speaking area. Many of the events are realized in cooperation with other institutions.
This exceeding dedication has repeatedly received honorific attention.
In 1991, the Archive of the German Women's Movement was awarded the Culture Funding Prize of the city of Kassel "for establishing an archive open to the public but also for the popularization of culturally important women-related topics". On March 8th, 2006 the foundation was furthermore distinguished as one of the "Selected Places" within the contest "365 Places in the Land of Ideas".
